היום לפני 69 שנים שוחרר גטו לודז', הגטו השני בגודלו בפולין. למעלה מ- 200,000 יהודים עברו בשעריו. הגטו היה בגודל של שכונה גדולה. מנהיג היהודים בגטו, רומקובסקי, האמין בכל ליבו שעבודה יצרנית של היהודים למען הצבא הגרמני, תמנע מהגרמנים לפגוע ביושביו. כאשר הנאצים החלו לשלוח ילדים אל מחנות ההשמדה פנה אל הוריהם והתחנן שימסרו את ילדיהם בכדי להציל את עורם. עד 1945 נשלחו רוב יושבי הגטו אל מחנות השמדה סמוכים כולל רומקובסקי ומשפחתו. כאשר הסובייטים שיחררו את המחנה ב-19 בינואר 1945, 877 יהודים יצאו לחופשי ביניהם 12 ילדים. 

69 years ago today, The Lodz Ghetto, the second largest Ghetto in Poland was liberated. Over 200,000 Jews passed through its gates. The Ghetto was the size of a large neighborhood. The Jewish leader in the Ghetto, Rumkowski, believed that if Jews manufacture goods for the German army, the Germans will not harm them. When the Nazis started to send children to death camps, he turned to their parents and begged them to hand over their children in order to save themselves. By 1945 most inhabitants were sent to death camps including Rumkowski and his family. When the Soviets liberated the camp on January 19th, 1945, 877 Jews were liberated among them 12 children.
